Baked Beans seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - September)

The winter months are the engine room for Baked Beans. With the Southern Ocean storm track firing on all cylinders, average swell heights climb to 2.3-2.4m (7.5-8ft) and periods reach 12.2-12.5s. SSW and SW groundswell dominate, delivering the power and length needed to put this northeast-facing beach to work. The catch is wind: ideal offshore flow occurs only 17-21% of the time, so the early morning windows before the thermal onshore wind kicks in are often the best bet. Score those dawn slots and you will find the biggest, most powerful surf of the year.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & October - November)

During the transitional months, the storm track is still active but less consistent. Swell heights hover around 2.1-2.2m (7ft) with periods between 10.8s and 11.7s, mixing long-period Southern Ocean groundswell with more moderate pulses. Ideal wind percentages in the low-to-mid twenties are slightly better than midwinter, especially in November, but these months can also bring a tricky mix of directions, changing pressure gradients and more variability between frontal passages.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Summer is the low-energy season along this stretch. Average swell drops to 1.9-2.0m (6-6.6ft) and periods fall back to 10.7-11.0s, so heavy groundswell becomes less reliable. On the bright side, offshore flow from S/SW/WSW is more present than in winter, reaching 28-29% of the time, which gives cleaner, more user-friendly conditions. It can be summery, fun and grovelly, especially on the longer-period pulses that still manage to wrap into the break.
