Best Surf Season (May - August)

The winter months are when Hermanus truly comes alive. As the Southern Ocean storm track intensifies and low-pressure systems ride the Roaring Forties toward the Cape, the average swell height climbs to 2.5-2.8m (8-9ft) with periods of 12.3-12.5s. This is powerful, long-period groundswell. Critically, the post-frontal westerly-to-northwesterly flow becomes far more regular, blowing offshore and grooming the SSE-facing breaks. Ideal wind percentages jump from the summer teens to 32-38 percent, giving Hermanus its longest windows of clean surf.

Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)

The shoulder seasons offer the best balance of wave size and smaller crowds. March still has the summer wind regime, but the Southern Ocean begins to stir, and April sees the ideal-wind percentage rise to 26 percent while periods stretch beyond 12s. September and October remain solid-average swells of 2.3-2.6m (7.5-8.5ft)-but the SE trade wind slowly reasserts itself and the percentage of clean, offshore days drops back toward 17-24 percent.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

From mid-spring through summer, Hermanus is at its ficklest. The South Atlantic high settles in, the trade wind blows from ESE/SE/S for days at a time, and the average swell height drops to 2.1-2.3m (7-7.5ft) with shorter 11.1-11.3s periods. Although there is size, the SE/E wind puts a bump on the surface and most swells arrive from the less-than-ideal SSW/SW quadrant. The few clean days come when a passing cold front or a cut-off low delivers NW winds and a more southerly swell angle-then the spot can still light up.
