Jeffreys Bay seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - August)
The Southern Ocean enters its most active phase during the austral autumn and winter, and Jeffreys Bay reaps the reward. Average swell heights climb to 10ft (3.1m), periods stretch beyond 12.4s, and the percentage of ideal surfing wind peaks between 45 and 49 percent. The dominant SSW/SW groundswell is not the theoretically direct E/ESE window, but its long period and power allow it to wrap efficiently into this east-facing point, producing the heavy, hollow, racetrack walls that made J-Bay famous. W/WSW/WNW offshore flows dominate, grooming the faces into some of the most consistent waves of the year.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
These are transition months, caught between summer's onshore easterlies and winter's stronger westerlies. March and April still see solid 8-9ft (2.4-2.7m) SSW/SW groundswell with a rising trend in W/WSW offshore wind - many excellent days arrive. September and October hold winter's leftover size, but the wind fields become more variable as onshore E/ENE breezes build. You need a flexible schedule and an eye on the daily wind forecast, but quality can be very high when a cold front passes and the wind clocks west.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
Austral summer weakens the mid-latitude storm track, bringing average swells down to 8ft (2.4-2.5m) with shorter 11s periods. The east-facing spot actually sees more direct E/ESE swell energy, but the thermal wind regime is dominated by onshore E/ENE/ESE breezes, which destroy surface quality. Ideal wind sits near 33-35 percent, and the lineup is often bumpy or wind-blown. November and February are slightly better, thanks to occasional strong SW groundswell and early-morning offshore windows, but overall the consistency and raw power of the winter months are missing.
