Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (March - May)

Kommetjie's calendar is built around the slow strengthening of the South Atlantic storm track. Through March, April and May, the cold fronts of the Southern Hemisphere winter begin to march farther north, and the result at this west-facing corner of the Cape Peninsula is a potent mix of long-period SSW-to-SW groundswell and a growing WSW component. The average swell height climbs from 7.5ft (2.3m) to 8.5ft (2.6m), while average periods jump into the 11.7-12.4 second bracket. The famous Cape Doctor still blows strong out of the SE on many afternoons, but as the sea surface cools below 18°C the atmosphere becomes less unstable and offshore windows become more reliable, with ideal conditions occurring 13-19% of the time. These are the months when the combination of size, direction and wind aligns most often.
