Best Surf Season (May - August)

New Pier's east-northeast exposure is a magnet for Southern Hemisphere winter groundswell. From May through August, the long-period S, SSE, SE and E/ESE swells that roll through the Indian Ocean are groomed by offshore W, WNW and NW winds. The ideal-wind window climbs to 52-58%, average wave periods push past 10 seconds, and water temps drop to a refreshing 21.8-23.7°C. This is the heart of the season: clean, powerful, and consistent.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The shoulder months offer a blend of powerful groundswell and tradewind chop. March and April still see plenty of E-ESE swell, but the NE trades are slowly retreating; by September and October the NE flow rebuilds. Periods remain respectable at 9.2-10.0s and wave heights hold 1.7-1.8m, but the percentage of fully offshore days drops to 28-39%, so you have to pick your windows around cold fronts and morning lulls.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summertime spells the most challenging stretch. Persistent NE to ENE onshore winds, short-period 8.7-9.4s swell, humidity and frequent convective rainfall degrade surface quality. There are still fun 1-1.5m waves at dawn before the daily seabreeze, but only 26-29% of the time does the wind align offshore. Patience pays, but this is clearly the off-season at New Pier.
