Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Southern Ocean storm machine revs into life through the autumn months, and Sunset Reef answers the call between May and August. A relentless train of mid-latitude cyclones in the Roaring Forties aims long-period groundswell at the South African coast, pushing average swell heights to 2.6-2.9m (8.5-9.5ft) with wave periods sitting at a powerful 12.4-12.6s. On the open-ocean charts, the swell direction shows a strong SSW/SW bias, but the local bathymetry and the Cape Peninsula's refraction rotate much of that energy into Sunset's west-northwest window. The Cape Doctor still blows out of the southeast and south-southeast, but the clean-light-wind windows reach their seasonal peak of 18-20%, making this the most consistent time of year for serious, high-quality reef waves.

Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)

These are the transition months, when the ocean is still full of energy but the engine is either warming up or cooling down. March and April see periods stretching from 11.7s to 12.2s, with average swells of 2.3-2.4m (7.5-8ft). September and October hold onto winter's muscle with averages of 2.4-2.7m (8-9ft), but the storm track becomes less consistent and the southeast winds become stronger and more dominant. These months deliver plenty of solid sessions, especially when a fading winter groundswell aligns with a light easterly offshore wind, but the reliability of the deep winter months is not quite there yet.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

From November through February, the South Atlantic high settles in and the subtropical summer pattern takes over. Average swell heights drop to 2.3m (7.5ft), periods shorten to 11.1-11.3s, and the percentage of truly clean wind windows shrinks to 10-11%. The swell is still predominantly SSW/SW, but the energy is less organised and the big Southern Ocean fetches are further away. The Cape Doctor blows hard and often, and while it is offshore for most of the Peninsula's west-facing reefs, it is frequently too strong for the surface to stay glassy. There are still fun summer waves, especially on early south-east mornings, but this is the small, less consistent end of the Sunset Reef year.
