Best Surf Season (May - August)

Umdloti is at its finest through the Southern Hemisphere winter. As the high-pressure belt shifts north and cold fronts sweep under South Africa, the Indian Ocean starts sending regular S and SSE groundswells up the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Average wave heights hold around 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods push into the 10-10.8s range, giving the east-southeast-facing banks real power. Even more important, the wind turns favorable: ideal surf wind climbs to 47-60% during May-August, with the classic WNW and NW land breeze regularly grooming the faces. Water temperatures drop to 21-23°C but remain comfortable in a 3/2 or springsuit. This is when Umdloti becomes a consistent, lined-up, rippable wave.
