Best Surf Season (May - August)
The Wedge's finest hours arrive when the Southern Ocean storm tracks get the memo and shift equatorward. During these dead-of-winter months, the South Indian Ocean produces a near-constant conveyor belt of groundswell. Average wave periods climb to 10.2-10.8s, and more importantly, the prevailing winds swing offshore (SW through WNW). Ideal wind percentages peak at 59% in June, meaning clean, lined-up sets are the rule rather than the exception. South and south-southeast swells dominate the mix, and when they hit the bank with a solid 1.5-2m (5-6.5ft) of power and a westerly breeze, The Wedge turns into a fast, rippable righthander. Water temps hover around 21-23°C, so a spring suit is still part of the program.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)
These shoulder months are a game of windows. In the autumn shoulder (March-April), periods are on the rise and the NE trade wind is slowly losing its grip; ideal wind percentages climb from 32% to 40%. The swell mix is evenly spread between E/ESE and S/SSE, so The Wedge can be firing on one day and junky the next. The spring shoulder (September-October) is the mirror image: SSW winds start to intrude, NE winds build back toward summer strength, and periods start slipping from 9.6s down to 9.2s. You'll get occasional long-period S swells that light the bank up, but they are increasingly sandwiched between long spells of onshore slop. This is a time to pick your days carefully.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
Summer at The Wedge is a trade wind grind. The NE-ENE quadrants blow onshore 40-45% of the time, with average periods dropping to 8.7-9.4s. The wave height still averages a playful 1.6m (5.2ft), but without the period and clean offshore flow, the bank turns into a crumbly, sectioned mess. Swell direction is still dominated by E and ESE, the spot's ideal directions, but the persistent onshore wind creates constant chop and poor shape. If a rare westerly wind window coincides with an E swell, the Wedge can still produce fun, grovelly waves - but that's a shortboard 'funboard' session, not the powerful, hollow wedge that winter brings. Air temps are warm (23-25°C), sea temp hits 25°C, and rainfall in the 3.3-3.8mm/day range adds to the muggy feel. This is the season to be on a longboard or just enjoy the beach.
