Best Surf Season (June - July)

If you are planning a trip to Wilderness, June and July are your best statistical bet. The swell table is stubbornly flat - every month shows the same problem: average swell height near 0ft (0.0m), average period 0.0s, and the ideal-surfing score at 0%. But the midwinter windrose tells the real story: offshore flow from N, NNE, NW and NNW rises to more than 40% of all observations. That means this south-facing beach is far more likely to link up with S/SSW groundswell under a grooming offshore wind. Cold fronts sweeping north of the Agulhas Current bring clean lines and occasional pumping long-period energy, while water temperatures cool to 15.8-16.2°C. It is still a fickle stretch of coast, but relative to the rest of the year, winter is when the stars align most often.

Fair Surf Season (May & August - September)

The shoulder months offer a decent compromise. May sees offshore winds climb above 35%, while August and September hold onto 18-29% before the summer sea breeze re-establishes itself. These months can produce excellent S/SW groundswell events, especially after a strong cold front, but the wind direction is less consistent and can swing through W, WSW and SSE in the space of a day. The ideal-surfing percentage remains at zero in the data due to the missing swell signal, but in reality these are the months where a sharp-eyed surfer can find clean, un-crowded waves in the early morning.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From late spring through summer, the South Atlantic High settles closer to the Garden Route, and the windrose tips hard into ESE/SE flow. The offshore wind share collapses to between 4% and 10%, while ESE dominates at 15-20% of the observations. Combined with a flat wave signal in the averages, this is the true low season: small, choppy and largely unsurfable for the south-facing sand and reef sections. Occasional cut-off lows can still generate a south swell in this window, but the accompanying onshore wind usually makes it a battle. If you are limited to these months, chase dawn sessions and the few hours after a cold front slips east.
