Best Surf Season (October - March)
Los Quebrantos sits exposed to the full force of the North Atlantic on Spain's northern coast, with an open NNW-facing layout that thrives when the westerlies kick the ocean into gear. From October through March, average swell heights hold between 1.3m and 1.7m (4.3-5.6ft) with periods of 11.2-12.7s, thanks to a climatological strengthening of the storm track across the Atlantic. Deep lows south of Iceland and in the Bay of Biscay spin up long-period NW and NNW swell trains that wrap straight onto the beach, while high-pressure ridges over Iberia deliver offshore S, SSW and SW winds. December and January are the crown jewels, with ideal wind stats of 63% and 60%, and water temps of 13-14°C (55-57°F), so a 4/3mm hooded suit becomes standard gear.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
The shoulder months offer inconsistent but rideable waves. April still averages 1.3m (4.3ft) with 10.7s periods, but the ideal wind percentage drops to 40% as the Azores High begins to flex. May sees the North Atlantic start to doze, with 1.0m (3.3ft) average and periods dipping to 9.8s, while September marks the first awakening as autumn lows return with 1.1m (3.6ft) and 10.2s periods. These months are a gamble: clean S/SSW/SW offshore mornings can produce fun, lined-up waves, but onshore NE/ENE and NNW winds are a constant threat.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet season at Los Quebrantos. The Azores High locks in over the eastern Atlantic, the polar front storm track shifts north, and surf averages bottom out at 0.8-0.9m (2.6-3.0ft) with periods down in the 8.7-9.0s range. The wind regime turns unfavourable, with ENE and NE winds combining for 31-35% of all readings, while the offshore S-SSW-SW quadrant fades to just 5-7%. Onshore NNW/NE breezes often chop up the smaller swell. Still, if a rogue summer storm or distant hurricane track sneaks through, the bay can light up with clean NW swell, but you will need patience and a grovel board.
