Mejillones

Mejillones is the kind of reef that commands respect and delivers reward in equal measure—a deep-water outer reef that acts as a relentless swell magnet, hoisting groundswells from the deep Pacific long before they reach the shore. With ample water covering a jagged, uneven reef structure, the wave jacks up with authority, offering a variety of take-off zones that spread the crowd and open up options. Expect waves that race both left and right, with the reef's topography shaping smooth, powerful walls and the occasional stand-up barrel when conditions align. The raw, exposed setting means it handles solid size, but the uneven bottom demands sharp reflexes and a cautious line through the inside sections. Best approached on a mid-to-high tide to fend off the shallow spots, with a keen eye on clean, long-period westerly swells and an offshore hand from the east to keep the faces glassy. This is a spot for experienced surfers seeking a true, unscripted reef experience—raw, dynamic, and utterly captivating.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

Winter is when Mejillones truly turns on. The North Atlantic storm track sinks south and fires long-period swell into the northern Spanish coast, and this NNW-facing beach is beautifully positioned to catch it. The data shows average swell heights of 2.1-2.2m (7ft) and average periods of 12.0-12.9s, with a heavy concentration of swell from the NNW, NW and N quadrants. During these months the swell is powerful and well organized, and although the prevailing NE wind still limits the glassy windows, December stands out with 23 percent ideal wind, while January offers 19 percent. When high pressure drifts over Iberia and winds slip into the S/SSW/SW/WSW quadrant, Mejillones lights up with hollow, long-period lines.
