Orio seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life in October and Orio starts to feel the full force of the Basque coast's winter swell machine. Deep extratropical lows marching across the Atlantic push average wave heights up to 5-7ft (1.6-2.1m), with long-period groundswell from the northwest quadrant rhythmically lighting up the beach. The north-northwest-facing coastline lines up these waves perfectly, and southerly offshore winds blow 40-44 percent of the time, giving clean, powerful conditions through to early spring. These months are the most consistent and serious of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
As the ocean transitions between winter's fury and summer's lull, Orio still picks up rideable NW swell. April and May see average heights of 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods of 10-11s, while September starts to show the first signs of autumn energy after the summer doldrums. However, northerly onshore breezes become more frequent, and consistent offshore days drop to 28-32 percent, so timing is more critical and the wave quality is more mixed.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is quiet at Orio. The North Atlantic storm track shifts north, average swell heights fall to around 3-4ft (1m), and periods shorten to the 9s range. Thermal north-northwesterly sea breezes plague the lineup and glassy conditions become scarce. Though occasional small NW swell pulses can appear, the surf is smaller, softer and unreliable - ideal for beginners and longboarders rather than serious wave chasers.
