Oyambre seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The surf year at Oyambre peaks in the winter half-year. As the Azores High weakens and the North Atlantic storm track pushes south, long-period northwest groundswell becomes a near-constant presence in the Bay of Biscay. From October through March the average wave height sits between 1.5 and 2.0m (5-7ft) with periods of 11-13s, and the swell direction is dominated by the NW/NNW quadrant - exactly what Oyambre's north-west exposure is made for. South to south-west winds, the offshore directions at this beach, accompany the systems 34-46% of the time. When the NAO is positive, the zonal flow keeps the low-pressure conveyor belt aimed at northern Spain and the waves can be world-class. December and January are the peak, but the whole window delivers powerful, long-period surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder months offer a softer version of the same set-up. April, May and September still see a high proportion of NW and NNW swell, but average wave heights drop to roughly 1.2-1.4m (4-5ft) and periods settle into the 9-11s range. These are often fun, rippable days with lighter winds and warmer water, but there are more flat spells. Ideal offshore flow is rarer - down to 24-28% - so patience and careful forecast reading are essential. April can still steal a late winter swell, while September is the first true taste of autumn groundswell.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest period of the year at Oyambre. The Azores High pushes north, the Atlantic storm track retreats, and the beach is left with small, short-period windswell. Average waves hover around 1.0m (3ft) with periods of 8.7-9.1s. Huge percentages of the swell still arrive from the NW and NNW, but the energy is weak and the prevailing NE/ENE sea breeze tends to make conditions lumpy. Ideal offshore winds drop to only 15-17% of the time, leaving a handful of early-morning windows for clean summer surf. The trade-off is warm water around 20-21°C, long days and plenty of beach time.
