Penarronda

Nestled within a sprawling bay, Peñarronda is a classic sand-bottom beachbreak that delivers a handful of shifting peaks, offering both lefts and rights. As the tide drops, the waves tend to fatten up into playful, grindable walls, providing ample room for carving turns. The setup is versatile enough to entertain a range of surfers, though the peaks can be fickle, rewarding those who read the shifting banks. Water quality remains reliable with no significant pollution to speak of, making it a clean option for a session any time of year.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during October, and Penarronda enters its prime as a parade of extratropical cyclones marching toward the Bay of Biscay sends consistent long-period groundswell into this north-facing Asturian beach. From October through March, average swells run 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) with periods of 11-12s, and the most consistent swell window comes from the northwest and north-northwest. The wind pattern is also favorable: high pressure over the Iberian Peninsula and a strong wintertime thermal gradient helps S, SSW and SW offshore flow blow around 40-47 percent of the time. That combination - solid west-northwest groundswell plus land-breeze style offshore wind - makes for powerful, clean and well-ordered waves. November, December and January are the standouts, though February and March still deliver plenty of heavy, rippable surf.
