Best Surf Season (October - March)
Playa A Frouxeira faces north-northwest, so it needs a serious North Atlantic pulse to light up. From October through March, the climatological storm track over the North Atlantic is fully active, and successive extratropical cyclones send long-period WNW, NW, and NNW swell marching toward Galicia. Average swell heights range from 7.9ft (2.4m) in October to 10.8ft (3.3m) in January, with periods consistently in the 11-13 second bracket. That combination puts the beach in the powerful, long-period sweet spot. Better yet, these same winter systems often drag southerly to southwesterly winds across the region, giving Frouxeira the offshore flow it needs to keep those northwest slabs clean. The synoptic rivalry between the Icelandic Low and Azores High becomes your best friend; when the NAO is negative or neutral, the storm track dips south and Frouxeira reaps the reward.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
As the ocean transitions between winter and summer, the surf drops to a smaller but still rideable level. April and May see average swell heights of 7.5ft (2.3m) and 5.9ft (1.8m) respectively, with periods falling from 10.7s to 9.8s. September marks the first real return of autumn energy, with 6.2ft (1.9m) average swell and 10.2s periods. Wind directions become more variable during these shoulder months, and the percentage of ideal surfing wind drops to between 23 and 28 percent. You'll need to play the daily forecast, chasing early morning windows or southerly wind shifts, but clean glassy days are not uncommon.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the sleepy season at Frouxeira. The Azores High builds northward and pushes the storm track up towards Iceland, leaving the northern coast of Spain in a swell shadow. Average swell heights shrink to 4.9-5.2ft (1.5-1.6m) and periods drop to the 8.6-9.1s range, which produces the punchy, average, wind-swell-like waves. To make matters worse, the prevailing wind rotates to the north and northeast, blowing directly onshore at this NNW-facing beach. Ideal offshore winds only occur 15-18 percent of the time, and those windows are often early in the morning. Not completely flat, but a long way from firing.
