Today's Surf Conditions at Playa de La Concha
Spot Overview & Description
Nestled at the western edge of San Sebastian's iconic La Concha, Ondarreta delivers a modest beach break that rarely earns a spot on the travel bucket list. The waves peel over a forgiving sandy bottom, offering short, punchy lefts and rights that often devolve into semi-closeouts. When a storm swell pumps too much energy into neighboring La Zurriola, Ondarreta transforms into a shorebreak zone, throwing steep, dumping walls best left for body-surfers and those with a high tolerance for impact. Water quality here leaves something to be desired—moderate pollution, primarily from residential runoff and stormwater drainage, means you'll want to check the forecast and avoid paddling out after heavy rain. This is a spot for a quick session when conditions align, not a destination in itself.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (October - February)
The North Atlantic is the engine of Playa de La Concha, and during autumn and winter it runs at full tilt. From October through February, average surf heights hold between 5ft (1.6m) and 7ft (2.1m), while average wave periods remain in the 11-13 second range - strong, long-period groundswell generated by a parade of extratropical cyclones crossing the Atlantic. The beach's NW-facing exposure puts it directly in the path of the W, WNW, NW, and NNW swell windows that dominate this time of year. Equally important, the offshore SW-W wind quadrant blows 41-46% of the time, producing regular opportunities for glassy, well-groomed waves. When the NAO tilts negative and the storm track sinks south, La Concha can go from good to genuinely world-class. This is the strike season at La Concha.
