Playa de la Garita seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Playa de la Garita pulses with the North Atlantic's winter heartbeat. From October to March, the climatological storm track strengthens, sending angular groundswell down toward the Canaries. Average wave heights in these months regularly reach 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods sit between 11 and 13 seconds, putting the beach in powerful long-period territory. The east-facing bay responds best when the swell trends from the W/SW, but the more prevalent WNW and NNW lines can also wrap well when the period holds. Wind is the perennial gatekeeper: the NE trades still blow often, but this window offers the highest percentage of offshore W/NW flow, especially in October. NAO-driven shifts in the North Atlantic storm track decide whether the Atlantic sends long-period pulses down to the islands or spins them out into the Bay of Biscay, making these months the most reliable for quality surf.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
The shoulder seasons trade size for manageability. April and May still receive plenty of energy, but the dominant swell directions swing to N and NNE and the period drops to 8-10s, making the surf more cross-shore and wind-affected. September is the most promising of the fair months: water is warm, the first long-period pulses appear, and ideal wind percentages climb back into the mid-teens. It is a time for keeping expectations reasonable-3-5ft (1-1.5m) waves on the better days-but the trade-off is a cleaner, warmer line-up.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the flat and bumpy season. The Azores High locks in over the mid-Atlantic, the trades blow hard from the NNE, and the swell window shrinks to short-period N/NNE windswell. Average heights still register 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m), but with periods of 7-8s and ideal offshore wind only 3-5%, the wave quality falls apart. This is the season of choppy, sideshore conditions, where the best surfing is often found somewhere else on the island. When the trades ease at dawn, a few determined surfers may get an hour of semi-clean waves, but consistency is the thing summer lacks.
