Playa del Castillo

Stretching along a broad expanse of golden sand, Cotillo Beach offers a dynamic beachbreak that delivers both lefts and rights over a shifting seafloor. When the sandbanks recover from winter's scouring, the waves can pack a punch, standing up and folding into hollow, barrel-worthy sections that demand sharp reflexes. Further south, the seabed becomes more textured, with intermittent fingers of volcanic rock adding character and occasional closeout hazards. The northern flank finds shelter in north to northeast winds, creating a more protected arena where the banks remain shifty and fast, conjuring playful, rippable waves. Head south, and the lineup opens up into a sprawling maze of peaks, each set breaking over sand and stone, offering a more exposed, multi-lane playground for those willing to navigate the rocky interruptions.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The surf year at Playa del Castillo is dictated by the North Atlantic storm track. From October through March, the upper-level pattern becomes more dynamic, the Azores High retreats, and low-pressure systems roll toward Western Europe. Average swell heights sit in the 5-7ft (1.5-2.2m) range with periods climbing into the 11-13s band, giving the spot long-period, powerful ground swell. Directionally, NNW and NW dominate the wave rose, and while true west or WNW is the absolute magic angle for this west-facing beach, the NW/NNW energy still produces solid surf. Ideal wind windows are at their best, with 24-31 percent of the time falling into clean conditions. This is the season to circle on the calendar.
