Razo seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Razo sits squarely in the North Atlantic firing line, and when autumn arrives the beach transforms into a serious, heavy-water wave factory. From October through March the average swell height sits between 8-11ft (2.4-3.3m) with long-period energy running 11-13 seconds. A parade of extratropical cyclones marching across the Atlantic drives consistent WNW, NW and NNW groundswell straight into the beach. The magic comes when S to SW winds blow offshore while those northwest swells unload. Ideal wind windows occur 26-31% of the time during these months, giving Razo its best shot at clean, powerful, and occasionally epic surf.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)
As the jet stream begins to lift north and the Azores High starts to assert itself, Razo enters a transition phase. April can still produce solid 8ft (2.4m) mid-period swell, but by May the energy drops to around 6ft (1.8m) with shorter 9-10 second periods. September marks the reverse transition, with the Atlantic waking back up and the first proper groundswells of the season arriving. The problem is the wind: strong NE and E/NE flow becomes more common, cutting the ideal offshore wind window to around 20-25%. Still, on days when a southwesterly breeze meets a fading NW swell, Razo offers fun, rippable waves with far less crowd and chaos than winter.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the slow season at Razo. The Azores High locks in, the North Atlantic storm track retreats, and average surf heights slump to around 5ft (1.5m) with average periods of only 8.5-9 seconds. The swell that does arrive is largely shorter-period NW/NNW energy, while the wind pattern becomes dominated by NNE and NE flow that spoils the shape. Ideal surfing winds only occur 15-18% of the time. There can be small, clean longboard days and the occasional tropical-generated pulse, but consistent quality is hard to find. If you want serious Razo, aim for the colder months.
