Sabon seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
North Atlantic low-pressure systems fire up as autumn transitions into winter, and Sabon, with its west-northwest exposure, is right in the crosshairs. During these months, average swell heights climb from 2.2m (7.2ft) in October to a peak of 3.0m (9.8ft) in January, while periods consistently push 12-13 seconds. The dominant W, WNW and NW swells hit the coast with serious power, and with the ideal wind window (SSW to SW) blowing 40-43% of the time, conditions line up more often than not. Expect solid, pumping surf and occasional XXL days when the Atlantic really unloads.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
Spring and early autumn deliver a classic shoulder-season mix. April sees average heights of 2.1m (6.9ft) and periods around 10.9s, while September brings back 1.7m (5.6ft) with periods climbing past 10s. The west-northwest swell window remains dominant, but wave energy is more inconsistent and the longer-period groundswells are less frequent. Still, on the right day, clean cross-shore winds and warm air can make for excellent, rippable surf.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the sleepy season at Sabon. Average swell heights drop to 1.3-1.5m (4.3-4.9ft) and periods shrink to 8.8-9.2s, leaving mostly small, choppy, short-period waves. The prime W-WNW swells are still present, but they lack punch, while a persistent NE breeze takes the edge off any quality. This is the time to bring a groveler, check the odd groundswell pulse, or wait for autumn's first big low to reignite the Atlantic.
