Zarautz seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
Zarautz faces straight into the teeth of the north-west Atlantic, and when autumn and winter extratropical storms start stacking up across the Bay of Biscay, the Basque coast lights up. From October through March the average swell stands at a solid 5-7ft (1.6-2.1m) with periods of 11-13s, and the NW/WNW/NNW swell window delivers exactly the direction this beach loves. The crucial ingredient is wind: a continental high over Iberia or a trailing cold front can set up clean offshore flow from the S/SSW, and during this six-month window ideal winds blow 36-45% of the time. Positive phases of the NAO tend to funnel a lively low-pressure track toward northern Spain, while high pressure anchored over France promotes the southerly land breezes that groom Zarautz into lines. This is the season when long-period groundswell and offshore wind combine for truly memorable sessions.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
As the jet stream lifts north in spring and wavers back in early autumn, the swell machine becomes more inconsistent. April and May still see a very NW-dominated wave climate - a combined 70-85% of all swell from the NW/WNW/NNW quadrant - but average heights ease to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and average periods drop to 10-11s. September marks the first real return of autumn energy, with average heights climbing back to 4ft (1.3m) and longer-period pulses becoming more common. Wind is the limiting factor, as afternoon sea breezes from the N/NW sector increasingly challenge the morning S/SSW offshore windows. Surfable, occasionally fun, but you have to pick your windows carefully.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest time for Zarautz. The Azores High becomes the dominant feature over the North Atlantic, shunting the storm track toward Iceland and Greenland. Average swell height bottoms out at around 3ft (1.0m) with periods of just 8-9s, and although the swell direction remains predominantly NW, the energy is too weak to create real power. To make matters worse, the prevailing summer wind is from the NNW/NW - dead onshore for this beach - and the ideal offshore S/SSW wind is present only 18-22% of the time. The warm water (up to 22.5°C) and long summer days make it tempting, but expect small, grovely, often wind-affected conditions. Summer is a time for longboards and low expectations.
