Best Surf Season (June - August)

The heart of winter brings the most consistent combination of powerful, long-period swell and the highest frequency of offshore wind windows. Average wave heights hover around 2.7m with periods pushing 14s – that's XL groundswell courtesy of the roaring Southern Ocean. The percentage of ideal wind (NW to NW) peaks at 12% in July, which is still a narrow window, but when the stars align, you get pristine, glassy lines wrapping into the sheltered SE-facing reefs. These are the months to flex your schedule and pounce on those synoptic setups where a transient high sits to the south, directing westerly flow over the islands.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September - October)

Shoulder months offer a trade-off: slightly smaller but still solid swell (2.2-2.5m) with periods remaining in the 13-second range, while offshore wind probabilities drift to 7-10%. The transition seasons see more frequent frontal passages, meaning the wind direction is more variable. While you won't score as many perfect days as winter, the chances of finding a clean, manageable wave increase, especially if you target early mornings before the sea breeze kicks in. The Indian Ocean storms are still active, sending long-range SW to SSW energy into the zone.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

Summer and early autumn are dominated by the prevailing SE trade wind regime. Ideal offshore wind drops to a mere 3-5%, while onshore SSE and S winds howl at 30-50+ kph over 70% of the time. The swell remains surprisingly consistent for the tropics, averaging 2.2-2.3m from the SSW, but the constant onshore chop makes it a battle. Wave periods shorten to 11-12s, resulting in more disorganized, weaker energy. For the determined surfer, occasional tropical lows brushing the northwest shelf can create brief windows of lighter wind and cleaner conditions, but overall, it's a grind.

January: Height of the Trade Wind Grind

Summers peak with a dominant onshore flow from S and SSE – a combined 70% of all wind observations, with speeds often exceeding 40 kph. This spells constant chop and blown-out faces for the Abrolhos. The swell is mercifully solid: 2.3m average with 11s periods, mostly from SSW (40%) and S (15%). Those energy bands are long and powerful, but the relentless onshore wind destroys their potential. Ideal offshore wind (NW to NNW) registers a mere 3% – typically only in brief early-morning windows after a cold front passes to the south. The few surfable moments come when a weak high-pressure cell stalls west of the coast, backing the wind to a lighter W or SW direction.
