Adonis seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (March - April & November)

The transition months between the northeast and southwest monsoons deliver the most consistent quality at Adonis. During March and April, the weakening NE trades give way to a more variable wind regime, with offshore flows from the NW quadrant becoming frequent. Swell directions shift firmly into the S-SSW-SW window, firing the reef with clean, long-period groundswell. November sees a similar setup as the SW monsoon retreats, bringing a high percentage of offshore NW winds and powerful SSW-SW swell. These months offer the best balance of groomed faces and punchy wave heights.

Fair Surf Season (February, May, September, October, December)

February and December still see a mix of NE and E wind patterns but benefit from occasional NW offshore breaks and solid S-SSW swell. September and October sit in the heart of the SW monsoon; while swell is plentiful from the south, the prevailing W to WSW onshore flow often chops up the surface. May is a similar story – the SW monsoon is becoming established, bringing decent size but ruining quality with onshore winds a majority of the time. These months require patience to pick the right window.

Low Surf Season (January, June, July, August)

January is locked into the northeast monsoon with dominant NE winds and swell from the E-ENE quadrant – both poor for Adonis. The small, short-period E swell barely reaches the reef, and the NE winds create bumpy, unrideable conditions. During June, July, and August, the southwest monsoon peaks, delivering plenty of S-SSW swell but almost constant onshore W to WSW winds. The wave heights can be fun-sized but the texture is often messy, making it hard to find a clean wall. These months are best left to the brave or the boat-chasing crew.

Conditions at Adonis in January

January: Northeasterly Dominance

January is locked in the northeast monsoon, with 36% of all wind coming from the NE and another 20% from the E-NE – all onshore or cross-shore for Adonis. Offshore NW flows are rare at just 0.7% from NW and 0.9% from WNW. The swell is equally uncooperative: a full 20% arrives from the E-ENE direction, with average heights of 1.0m and a short period of 8.0s. This E swell wraps in at low energy, producing weak, gutless waves. Only 35% of the time are the winds favorable, and even then the swell quality is average at best. Look for brief windows when a NW wind shift aligns with any S-SSW swell, but overall, this is a month to sit out.
