Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, delivering consistent, powerful swell from the NW to WSW quadrants. Average wave heights hover in the 2.4m to 2.7m range, with periods often exceeding 12 seconds — that's long-period, groundswell territory. High-pressure systems over the Azores and deep lows tracking south of Greenland create a conveyor belt of storm trains aimed directly at the Portuguese coast. Offshore winds from the ENE to SE blow 44-56% of the time, offering clean, groomed faces. This is the window for Afife's true potential: pumping, heavy, firing conditions with occasional XL days.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As the jet stream shifts north, the Atlantic storm track weakens. April still holds solid 2.1m average swell with good period (11s), while May sees a drop to 1.7m and shorter period (9.9s). Wind patterns become more variable, with ideal offshore flow 32-41% of the time. September marks the transition back: the first autumn gales boost the average swell to 1.6m and period to 10.5s, and the offshore wind percentage climbs back to 41%. Waves are fun to good — solid, rippable, but not consistently pumping.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles in with the Azores High parking itself over the region. Average swell height drops to a meager 1.4-1.5m, periods shorten to 8.7-9.2s — that's average, punchy at best, often choppy due to northerly winds. Offshore wind from the east quadrant occurs only 24-27% of the time. The dominant swell directions shift to NW and NNW, which are actually onshore for Afife's west-facing beach. Most days are small, fun-sized and require patience to find a clean wave. It's a good time for longboards and gear that paddles well, but don't expect any fire.

July: Height of Summer Flatness

July is the lowest point of the year for surf at Afife. The average swell height is just 1.4m and the period shrinks to 8.7s, meaning short period, choppy conditions dominate. The swell direction is overwhelmingly NW (37.5%) and NNW (35.7%), with a lesser amount of WNW (19.3%). Wave heights rarely exceed 1.5m; the majority are small, groveling waves. Ideal offshore wind drops to 24% — the lowest of the year. Easterly winds (ENE to SE) comprise only 6.0% (ENE 1.4%, E 0.9%, ESE 0.8%, SE 1.2%). The predominant winds are from the north and NNW, which blow onshore and ruin the already small swell. Patience is key; the few clean days are when a weak cold front passes and sets up a brief easterly flow. Otherwise, it's too small for a good surf.
