Best Surf Season (March & November)

The transitional months of March and November offer the most balanced trade-offs at Alwars. During these windows, the northeast monsoon wanes and the southwest monsoon establishes (or vice versa), creating episodic synergy between optimal ENE–E swell and light-to-moderate SSW–SW offshore winds. While consistency is fleeting and swell heights average only 0.8–0.9 m, periods climb into the 10–11 s range, bringing rideable, punchy waves when the alignment locks in. These are your best bets for clean-ish corners along this east-northeast facing beach.

Fair Surf Season (February, December)

February and December deliver the highest frequency of optimal swell directions (ENE, E, NE), but the northeast monsoon grips the coast with relentless NNE–NE onshore winds, blowing a staggering 70–80% of the time. The average wave period here sits at a choppy 8–9 s, and only a few southerly wind shifts (SSW–SW) during cold-front passages or pressure troughs offer rare, clean sessions. Expect mostly messy, crumbly waves unless you can hunt a rogue offshore window.

Low Surf Season (April – October)

The southwest monsoon dominates from April through October, filling the Indian Ocean with long-period (10–11 s) swell generated by persistent tropical lows and mid-latitude depressions. However, the swell arrives from the south and south-southwest – a direction that misses the optimal exposure of Alwars completely. Even though offshore winds from the SSW–WSW quadrant blow 20–50% of the time (peaking in April), the wave energy is either blocked by the coastline or heavily refracted into micro, close-outs. The result is a long stretch of flat-to-small conditions, best left for a beach walk or a change of venue.

December: Swell Returns, Wind Takes Over

December sees the northeast monsoon in full force: swell from the east-northeast (36.8%), northeast (24.3%), and east (12.4%) accounts for a whopping 73.5% of the wave energy – the highest of the year. The average height is 1.0 m, but the periods drop to 8.0 s, producing shorter, less powerful waves. The catch is the wind: NNE–NE blows 70.9% of the time, with strong gusts over 20–40 kph. Ideal wind plummets to just 6%. The result is a constant battle between good swell direction and choppy, onshore conditions. Rare southerly wind shifts (3.8% from SSW–WSW) can briefly clean things up, producing fun-sized 0.5–1.0 m waves. But consistency is terrible – most days are a blown-out chore.
