Best Surf Season (October - March)

The Ligurian winter fires up Andora's south-facing coastline as a series of deep Atlantic and Mediterranean low-pressure systems roll through. During these months, the average swell height hovers around 0.5-0.6m with periods in the 5-6s range, but the real quality comes from the prevalence of offshore N to NNW winds — blowing cleanly out of the Alps and creating glassy, groomed waves. The dominant SSW swell direction (25-40% of all swell) aligns perfectly with the beach's Süd-Süd-Ost exposure, delivering punchy, rippable lines. When a strong mistral or tramontana sets in, expect long-period groundswells from the S and SW that wrap into Andora with power.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These shoulder months see a transition in the regional weather pattern. April still receives a decent share of SSW swell (31% of the total) but the offshore wind reliability drops to just 11%, with more onshore flow from S and SSW spoiling the surface. Swell heights average 0.5m and periods slip to 5.3s — fun-sized but inconsistent. September benefits from the first autumn storms stirring the Med, pushing average heights back up to 0.4m and periods to 4.5s, but again only 8% ideal wind. Keep an eye on the charts for a passing cold front that could align the winds just right.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are dominated by a stubborn high-pressure ridge over the Mediterranean, leading to weak, short-period windswell. Swell heights average a meager 0.3-0.4m and periods barely reach 4.5s, producing mostly choppy, micro conditions. The wind regime switches to frequent S and SSW breezes (often onshore), with ideal wind percentages bottoming out at 6-9%. While Andora delivers a few fun, groveling sessions during a rare sea breeze front, this is the time to explore other regions or focus on surfing the early mornings when the thermal winds are calmest.

January: Deep Winter Groundswells

The North Atlantic storm track reaches its southernmost extension, and its energy funnels into the Ligurian Sea through the straits. January sees an average swell height of 0.6m and a period of 5.7s, with the dominant swell direction coming from the SSW (26% of all swell) and SW (21%). This is prime — these directions hit Andora's SSE-facing beach directly, producing clean, long lines. The wind is a game-changer: N winds blow 32% of the time, and NNW adds another 14%, meaning nearly half the month offers offshore conditions. When those colder, denser air masses pour out of the Po Valley, they groom the swell into glassy, tubular walls. Storms in the Gulf of Lion often generate S-SSW swell that arrives with pulse periods around 8-10s, translating to punchy, head-high sets on the better days.
