Best Surf Season (October - March)

The Gulf of Mexico awakens from its summer slumber as autumn arrives, and Anton Lizardo starts feeling the pulse of the North. From October through March, the combination of strong cold fronts pushing down from the continent and a more active subtropical jet stream generates consistent, quality swell from the N, NNE, NE, and NNW quadrants. Average swell heights hover between 1.0 and 1.1m, with wave periods often in the 6.4-6.8s range – punchy, rideable waves that wrap nicely into the beach. More importantly, offshore wind opportunities from the S, SSW, and SW peak during these months, with ideal wind conditions 21-23% of the time. This is the window when Anton Lizardo truly shines, delivering fun, solid sets that can ramp up to pumping 1.5-2.5m on the best days. If you time it right with a passing high-pressure system, you’ll score clean, lined-up surf with minimal chop.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are transition months, sitting on the edges of the prime window. In April, the swell begins to drop off (0.9m average, 6.1s period), but the wind remains favourable – still 23% offshore from the S/SSW. You’ll find smaller, grovel-worthy waves, often clean in the mornings before the sea breeze kicks in. September sees a similar average swell height (0.7m) and period (5.6s), but the wind consistency is lower (14% ideal). However, the first hints of autumn cold fronts can deliver sneaker N or NNW swells that bring more size and power. Both months are worth a look if you’re willing to chase the occasional window of offshore wind and decent swell.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer takes a toll on Anton Lizardo’s surf quality. From May through August, the dominant swell direction shifts dramatically to the ENE – a direction that doesn’t align well with the beach’s north-facing exposure. Swell heights drop to a meager 0.6-0.7m and periods shorten to 5.2-5.7s, resulting in weak, short-period, choppy conditions most of the time. On top of that, the prevailing winds are from the E and NE quadrants – exactly the onshore directions that ruin wave quality. Offshore wind from the S/SW is scarce, with ideal wind percentages falling to 14-21%. Occasional tropical disturbances can spin up small pulses from the north, but consistency is poor. Unless you’re desperate for a surf and happy riding micro waves on a longboard, this is the time to explore other spots or take a break.

January: Peak Winter Punch

January is the heart of winter along the Gulf Coast, and Anton Lizardo reaps the rewards. Average swell height sits at 1.1m with a period of 6.8s – solid, punchy waves that are well within the rideable range. The swell direction is dominated by the NNE (21.8%) and NE (25.4%) quadrants, with a healthy dose of NNW (10.3%) and N (9.8%) energy. These are exactly the directions that light up the beach. Wind patterns favour offshore conditions 21% of the time, with light to moderate S to SW breezes. However, note that N and NNW winds also blow strong – 19.3% from N and 18.8% from NNW – which are onshore and can ruin the surface. The key is to target days with a high-pressure system to the north, bringing clear skies and a light southerly flow. When it all lines up, you get clean, 1-1.5m fun surf with occasional 1.5-2.5m pumping sets from the NNW.
