Best Surf Season (November - February)
During the summer months of November through February, Aramoana experiences its prime window for peaky, rippable waves. The subtropical ridge strengthens across the Tasman Sea, feeding the region with a higher frequency of NE quadrant swell – exactly what this NE-facing beach needs. Average swell heights hover around 1.7-1.8m with periods of 10-10.5s, offering fun-sized to solid surf. Offshore winds from the SW quarter blow a consistent 22-24% of the time, often clearing the sky and grooming the faces. This is when the combination of swell direction and favourable wind aligns most often, delivering clean, organised lines. However, the trade-off is that onshore NE winds also become more frequent, so timing is key – dawn patrol or late afternoon sessions often score the window of light SW flow.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & August - October)
During the transitional shoulder months, the surf at Aramoana is a mixed bag but offers plenty of opportunity. In March and April, the last of the summer NE swell lingers while the first southern ocean groundswells begin to filter in, pushing average heights to 2.0m and periods to 11.2-11.4s. The percentage of offshore SW wind rises to around 26%, but the directional spread of swell becomes less consistent. August through October sees the reverse pattern: winter's SW groundswell dominance starts to give way to more NE pulses as spring progresses. Swell heights average 1.9-2.1m, periods remain long, and the offshore wind frequency sits at 23-26%. These months require a careful eye on the forecast – you'll get days of clean, powerful surf when a high parks east of NZ, but also plenty of days with windy, junky conditions.
Low Surf Season (May - July)
Deep winter from May through July brings the largest swells of the year – averaging 2.2m and periods of 11.2-11.6s – but these are predominantly generated by the roaring forties and come from the SSW-SW quadrant, which is far from ideal for Aramoana's NE exposure. While the offshore SW wind frequency peaks at 27-30% in these months, the swell rarely arrives with the correct angle to produce well-shaped surf. Instead, you're often faced with either slight wrap-around that's quickly flattened by the harbour entrance, or strong NW winds that side-shore the surface. It's not all bad – there are occasional windows of clean, overhead swell when a low slides southeast and the wind clocks around to SW, but the overall consistency and quality drops. Expect more down time and a lower percentage of rewarding sessions during these three months.
