Best Surf Season (October – March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, delivering a consistent barrage of powerful, long-period swell to Arrifana’s west-southwest-facing beach. Average wave heights hover between 2.1 and 2.4 m, with periods commonly reaching 12–13 s, translating into solid, rippable to pumping conditions. The predominant swell directions are from the NW and WNW, which, while not perfectly aligned, wrap nicely into the bay and provide substantial energy. More importantly, the frequency of offshore winds from the NNE, NE, and ENE quadrant peaks during this period (ideal wind conditions occur 44–54% of the time), dramatically increasing the percentage of clean, glassy sessions. When high-pressure systems stall over the Bay of Biscay and low-pressure tracks dip south across the North Atlantic, we see classic Portuguese winter setups: long-period groundswells combining with crisp continental easterlies. This is the window for the most consistent, high-quality surf of the year at Arrifana.

Fair Surf Season (April – June)

As spring progresses, the North Atlantic storm track begins to weaken, leading to a gradual decline in both swell height and period. Average wave heights drop from 1.9 m in April to 1.4 m in June, and periods shorten from 11 s down to 9 s, signaling a transition from powerful groundswells to more local windswell and weaker swell events. The dominant swell direction remains from the NW and NNW, but the energy is less organized. Offshore wind frequency falls to around 33–34%, meaning favorable conditions are less reliable. However, the mix of early spring cold fronts and the occasional late-season low can still deliver fun, punchy days, especially in April. A negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) pattern can keep the storm track active into May, offering brief windows of solid surf amidst the generally inconsistent spring weather.

Low Surf Season (July – September)

Summer arrives and Arrifana settles into its most sluggish period for surf. Average wave heights hover around 1.4–1.5 m, and periods drop to 8–10 s, indicating a dominance of weak, short-period swell trains. Swell direction is overwhelmingly from the NNW and NW, but the lack of strong generating lows in the Atlantic means these swells rarely pack the punch required for truly good waves. While the offshore wind frequency improves slightly (36–43%), the swell quality suffers. The combination of small, groveling waves and warm, light winds can be pleasant for novices or those seeking a fun-sized session, but serious wave-chasers will find these months underwhelming. Occasional tropical systems or anomalous low-pressure developments can bring a pulse of energy, but these events are rare and short-lived.

April: Mellowing Swell

April brings a significant step down in energy: average swell height now 1.9 m and period 11.1 s – still solid but no longer in the pumping range. The swell direction is heavily weighted toward the NW (34.1%) and WNW (21.5%), with a growing contribution from the NNW (13.6%) and a small but notable W component (6.4%). Windswell from the ESE (1.3%) also appears more frequently as spring lows develop over the Mediterranean. The most important change is the offshore wind frequency, which drops to 34% – the lowest point so far. While N (12.5%) and NNE (4.5%) still blow offshore, the westerly wind direction now accounts for nearly 30% of the total (WNW, W, WSW, SW), meaning onshore flow dominates. The surf quality becomes more inconsistent, with fewer clean sessions. Still, when a cold front stalls offshore and a high-pressure ridge extends from the Azores, you can score fun, solid waves with morning offshore breezes – perfect for intermediate surfers looking to enjoy the spring.
