Best Surf Season (November - February)

The northeast monsoon establishes a steady stream of ENE to ESE swell, delivering the largest and most consistent waves of the year. Average heights hover around 1.0-1.2m with periods in the 6-7s range – rideable, punchy and fun. The catch? Onshore winds dominate from the NE to E, but when a passing low-pressure system or cold front shifts the wind to the west (WSW to NW), the offshore flow cleans things up instantly. These windows are precious and can turn a chop-infested lineup into glassy, peeling walls. For the patient surfer, this is the prime window to score.

Fair Surf Season (June - September)

The southwest monsoon brings a complete reversal: consistent offshore winds from WSW to NW blow 60-65% of the time, creating picture-perfect surface conditions. However, the swell shifts to a southerly direction (SSE to S), which is far from ideal for the east-facing beach. Heights hover around 0.8-0.9m and periods stretch to 8-9s, offering some power, but the waves are often weak and gutless on the inside. This is longboard and fish territory – clean, fun-sized rollers for groveling sessions when the south swell manages to wrap in. Not the epic stuff, but a solid backup for a surf fix.

Low Surf Season (March - May)

The transition between monsoons is the quietest time of the year. Swell energy plummets, with average heights dropping to 0.7-0.8m and periods around 7-8s. The dominant swell direction swings to SE and then S, which misses the optimal window entirely. Wind is predominantly onshore or light-variable, with ideal offshore percentages falling to a miserable 11-12% in March. April and May see a slight improvement in offshore flow (up to 33% in May), but the swell remains marginal. Expect flat spells, micro-sessions and plenty of time spent watching the horizon. It's a good time to travel or work on your pop-up.

May: Onset of the Southwest Monsoon

May brings a shift in the wind patterns as the southwest monsoon begins to establish itself. Average swell height climbs back to 1.0m with a period of 7.2s. However, the swell is now mostly from the S (43.9%) and SSE (37.3%) – far from optimal. On the bright side, offshore winds start to appear more frequently: SSW (21%), SW (12.3%) and WSW (7.8%) combine to give ideal wind 33% of the time. This means cleaner surface conditions, but the wave quality remains poor due to the wrong swell direction. Expect small, weak lines that only hold up on a longboard. The occasional south swell wrap can provide a few fun corners if the tide cooperates.
