Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic delivers its full fury during these months, as the climatological peak of extratropical storm activity aligns perfectly with Azurara's west-southwest exposure. Average swell heights consistently exceed 2m, with long-period groundswells (10-13s) providing powerful, well-shaped waves. The key is the high frequency of offshore winds from the N through E quadrants (N, NNE, NE, ENE, E), which groom the surface into pristine, glassy conditions nearly half the time. This is when the spot truly comes alive, offering everything from fun-sized rippable walls to heavy, pumping barrels. The NAO often shifts negative, steering storms southward and locking in clean, cold northeasterly winds.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months offer a mixed bag. Swell heights remain decent (around 2m) but become less consistent as the storm track wavers. Periods hover in the 10-11s range, still generating good shape when the direction aligns. However, the percentage of ideal offshore wind drops to 38-44%, making clean conditions less reliable. April sees the tail end of winter's energy, while September marks the early return of autumn storms. Surfers need to pick their windows carefully, as alternating spells of onshore NW and SW winds can quickly chop up the surface. Still, when a high-pressure ridge sets up over Europe, the easterly flow can produce stellar days.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is a challenging time at Azurara. The average swell drops to 1.4-1.7m, and periods shorten to 8-10s, producing mostly small, weak, and often messy waves. The dominant swell direction shifts to NW and even NNW, which is less optimal for the beach's WSW orientation. Worse, the prevailing wind regime becomes strongly onshore from the NNW, polluting the surf with cross-onshore chop and closing out the weak swell. Ideal offshore wind plummets to just 33-37% of the time. While very occasional east wind days can salvage a fun-sized session, the general rule is small, groveling waves with poor shape. This is the low season for committed wave riding.

July: The Summer Doldrums

July is the absolute low of the year. Average swell height bottoms out at 1.4m, with a period of just 8.6s. The swell is dominated by NW (37.5%) and NNW (35.7%), delivering short-period, weak energy. The W swell is a mere 4.0%. The wind is even more unfavorable: ideal offshore drops to a paltry 33%. The wind rose is dominated by the NNW (34.1%), which is strongly onshore. This combination results in small, choppy, and often closed-out waves. The water warms up, but the surf rarely offers anything rideable beyond groveling conditions. July is best for swimming, sunbathing, or taking a break from surfing. Only the occasional east wind pulse (E 1.4%) can provide a few hours of clean, tiny waves for the dedicated souls.
