Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter along the KwaZulu-Natal coast is when Ballito truly comes alive. The South Indian Ocean roars to life as powerful mid-latitude storms march eastward, generating long-period groundswells that wrap beautifully into the bight. Average wave heights sit in the 1.5-2m range, with periods frequently hitting the 10-14s mark, delivering punchy, lined-up walls. The big story is the wind: a climatological shift brings frequent offshore flows from the west and northwest, grooming the faces to perfection. This is your window for clean, hollow waves.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The shoulder months of April and September offer a tantalizing mix of leftover winter swell and building summer energy. The ocean is still active, with average swell heights around 1.8-2.0m, but the wind consistency drops off. You'll have more days of onshore northeasterlies mixing in, so you have to pick your windows carefully. When the wind does align from the west, the waves remain fun and rippable.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

Summer in Ballito is dominated by the subtropical high-pressure belt and persistent northeasterly trade winds. These blow directly onshore, chopping up what would otherwise be decent swell. The Indian Ocean still sends pulses, particularly from the east and southeast, but the average wave period drops to the 8-9s range, making for weaker, more disorganized surf. The percentage of ideal wind is low (15-23%), so most days are a battle against bump. Early mornings or late afternoons can offer a brief offshore window, but don't expect consistency.

July: Consistency Continues

July is similar to June, with average height 1.8m and period 10.5s. Swell is again from the S (23.5%) and SSE (16.1%), with NE and ENE picking up slightly (2.9% and 11.6%). The wind remains favorable, with offshore components from W (4.9%), WNW (8.2%), and NW (6.9%). Ideal wind is 50%. Onshore NE winds are 10.6%. The surf remains excellent, though the swell height distribution shows a slight increase in the 2-2.5m range (8.1% from S), offering more powerful days. Consistent, clean, and firing—this is winter at its best.
