As spring takes hold, the average jet stream weakens and the Atlantic storms become less frequent. Swell heights drop to 2.0m in April and continue falling to 1.5m by June. Wave periods also shorten from 10.5s to 9.1s, making the waves more average but still punchy. The silver lining is wind: offshore flow from the north and northwest becomes more common, with ideal conditions occurring 28-30% of the time. This equates to more glassy mornings and clean afternoon sessions. The swell directions shift slightly, with a greater contribution from S, SSW, and even SE directions - directly in Barley Cove's sweet spot. While the size is smaller, the quality can be surprisingly fun. It's a season for groveling on shortboards when the swell is under 1m, but the 1-1.5m fun-sized days are relatively frequent and forgiving.

The only saving grace is the continued high chance of offshore winds (26-30%), but with little swell to work with, the surf is often small and clean. However, September marks the beginning of the transition back to winter, as the first strong storms of the autumn begin to generate longer-period S and SSW swells. For the die-hard summer surfer, occasional fun waves do appear, but this is the season to get the log out or chase other spots along the coast.
