Best Surf Season (August - October)

The southwest monsoon hits its stride from August through October, delivering the most consistent offshore winds of the year at Barrio. With the wind blowing cleanly from the S to WSW quadrant, the northeast-facing beach is glassed off and groomed. Meanwhile, the North Pacific begins to stir, sending pulses of ENE to NE swell that rebuild from the summer lull. Average wave heights climb from 0.8m in August to 1.1m by October, and periods stretch into the 9–10s range — offering punchy, rippable walls. This is the window where clean conditions meet solid swell, making for the most consistent surf experience.

Fair Surf Season (May - July & November)

May through July sees the full force of the southwest monsoon, with offshore wind frequencies soaring from 34% to 51%. However, the swell energy is at its annual minimum — average heights hover around 0.7–0.8m with periods in the 8.5–9s zone, often producing small, groveling waves. When a tropical disturbance or strengthening trade wind fetch aligns, fun-sized surf appears, but it’s mostly a longboard or foamie affair. November flips the script: the northeast monsoon is just beginning, so wind quality drops to just 13% ideal, but the swell from the Pacific is building rapidly — average 1.3m and 9.9s with a lot of NE energy. Those rare days when the wind goes light or southwest can deliver firing, overhead barrels, but you have to pick your window carefully.

Low Surf Season (December - April)

From December through April, the northeast monsoon dominates the region. The wind blows relentlessly from the N through ENE quadrant — exactly the onshore direction for Barrio. Ideal wind percentages bottom out at 3–7%, meaning most days are choppy and blown out. Paradoxically, this is when the swell is biggest: December and January average 1.6–1.7m with periods of 9.5–10s, and the NE/ENE fetch is firing. But with the wind straight onshore, wave quality suffers drastically. Only a brief push of southerly winds or a late-season typhoon passage can salvage a session. For the patient surfer, the occasional clean, powerful day does occur, but consistency is low and frustration high.

August: Summer Goldilocks

August sees the first signs of the swell pulse increasing again as distant North Pacific storms begin to send energy toward the Philippines. The average height edges up to 0.7m, but periods improve to 9.0s, adding more punch. Swell direction remains mostly ENE and E, but you’ll start to see a few more NE pulses — now 10% of the total. Wind is the star of the show: 60% ideal offshore flow is the highest of the year. The dominant wind directions are S, SSE, and SSW, all perfectly offshore for the northeast‑facing beach. With clean conditions and occasional waist‑high sets, August offers a uniquely fun combination of small but quality surf. It’s not the time for big waves, but for skill‑building in perfect conditions, this month is hard to beat.
