Best Surf Season (October - March)

Bauang's west-facing orientation means the prime window aligns with the Northern Hemisphere winter. From October through March, the North Pacific fires up, sending consistent NNW swell trains toward the Luzon coast. While the swell direction isn't perfect for this west-facing setup, the longer periods (averaging 7-8 seconds) and manageable heights (0.6-0.8m) keep things rideable. What really sets this period apart is the wind: the northeast monsoon brings clean, offshore breezes from the east quadrant up to 39% of the time in December, offering repeated windows of glassy conditions. This is when you'll find the most consistent combo of punchy, fun-sized surf and groomed faces.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are transitional months, caught between the winter high-pressure systems and the summer monsoon. Swell heights drop to 0.4-0.6m and periods shorten to 5.5-7 seconds, making for weaker, more inconsistent waves. Wind quality is mediocre, with ideal percentages hovering in the single digits to low twenties. However, occasional late-season northwesterly swells and lighter morning breezes can still provide a few decent sessions if you time it right.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer southwest monsoon dominates from May through August, bringing a dramatic shift in both swell and wind. Swell heights remain low (0.3-0.6m) and periods are short (5.5-7 seconds), limping along as windswell from the SSW to WSW. Unfortunately, these directions are onshore for Bauang's west-facing beach, meaning the wind is almost always a problem. Ideal surfing wind drops to 7-24% of the time. This is the low season for good reason: most days are small, choppy, and difficult to surf. The few brighter moments come from the rare typhoon swell that can wrap in from the west or northwest, but those are the exception, not the rule.

January: Peak of the North Swell

January is the heart of the northeast monsoon, delivering the highest average swell height of the year at 0.7m and a period of 7.8 seconds. Swell direction is overwhelmingly dominated by the NNW (91.0%), which is a bit too north for this west-facing beach but still provides rideable, punchy surf in the 0.5-1m range most of the time. The wind blows from the SSE (18.6%) and S (9.3%) more often than not, but ideal offshore conditions from the east occur 33% of the time, usually in the form of light morning breezes from the N, NNE, or E. Look for sessions when the wind goes around to the E or ENE to get the cleanest, most lined-up waves – that's when the fun-sized, ripable waves really come to life.
