Best Surf Season (May - October)

This is the window when the magic really lines up at Baya. The Indian Ocean roars to life, sending consistent, long-period groundswells from the deep south that wrap beautifully into the bay. Coupled with the onset of the Southeast Trade Winds, you get a climatological sweet spot where offshore flow from the east-northeast dominates. The result? Clean, glassy faces on average 1.6-2.0m with periods exceeding 14 seconds – that's firing, rippable surf day after day. The wind is ideal a whopping 64-70% of the time, so you can plan your sessions with confidence.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

These are transition months where the ocean is in between seasonal moods. April sees the tail end of the monsoon shift, with ideal wind percentages climbing to 52% but swell periods starting to stretch out nicely. November is a step down from the peak, with swell sizes dropping back to the 1.4m range and periods settling around 13 seconds. You'll still find clean windows, but you'll be working harder to read the charts for a window of opportunity. Both months offer solid waves when the conditions align, just not with the same consistency of the peak season.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

Winter brings a different beast to Baya. The region gets caught between the strong north-westerly monsoonal flow and the tail-end of the Southern Ocean storm track. While the swell direction (SSW/SW) remains favorable and heights average a rideable 1.4m with healthy 12-13 second periods, the wind quality plummets. Ideal offshore conditions drop to just 26-35% of the time. The prevailing NW and WNW winds create onshore and cross-shore chop that messes up the wave faces. You can still score – especially early morning before the monsoon wind kicks in – but you'll need a lot of patience and a willingness to battle the elements.

January: Monsoon Grit and Occasional Gems

January is the heart of the northwest monsoon across Indonesia. At Baya, the swell window lights up with SSW energy dominating at 52.4% of the total, followed by 24.5% from straight SW and 13.2% from the south. Heights are solid: 1-1.5m (38%) and 1.5-2m (28%) are the most common bands, with an average of 1.4m. The period sits at a long-period 12.4s, meaning when the wind plays nice, you get powerful, pitching waves. But here's the catch: wind is ideal only 26% of the time. The dominant breeze is from the north-west quadrant (NW at 22.5%, WNW at 21.1%, NNW at 11.6%), which adds significant chop and reduces wave quality. You'll want to score the rare days when the wind clocks around to the NNE or ENE. Early mornings can offer a brief window of clean conditions before the sea breeze kicks in. Patience is key, and when that perfect 2s day arrives, it's worth the wait.
