February and March see a ramp-up to 1.0-1.1m and periods stretching to 13.5s, while the trade wind regime delivers light offshore breezes from the N-NNE quadrant up to 28% of the time. September stands out with average swell of 1.4m and a 13.1s period, paired with the highest offshore wind reliability (27%) – a sweet spot when long-period lines push into the beach under pristine skies. During these months, the SSW-SW swell hits the beach directly, and the light N-to-NNE flow grooms the faces, producing rippable walls that hold their shape from dawn through mid-afternoon.

Fair Surf Season (April - August, October & December)

These months offer rideable waves but with trade-offs in consistency or wind quality. April sees a jump in swell height to 1.2m and period to 14.0s, but the offshore wind window shrinks to 21% as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) begins to drift north, increasing southerly flow. From May through August, average swell heights peak at 1.4m with periods around 13-14s, courtesy of robust Southern Ocean storms. However, the wind pattern shifts more onshore, with SSW and SW flow becoming dominant – blowing directly against the optimal offshore direction. Ideal wind percentages drop into the teens to low twenties. October and December provide a return to moderate conditions: October boasts solid 1.4m swell but only 22% offshore wind, while December dips to 1.0m average with 22% good wind. These months can still deliver fun, clean sessions when a high-pressure system establishes light offshore flow, often overnight and early morning.

Low Surf Season (November)

November is the trickiest month at Bejuco. While the average swell remains decent at 1.2m with a 12.4s period – still capable of producing punchy waves – the offshore wind reliability plummets to just 16%, the lowest of the year. The wind roses reveal a dominance of southerly to westerly breezes, often from the same direction as the swell, creating onshore, bumpy conditions that mush out the faces. The atmosphere is dominated by the tail end of the wet season, with the ITCZ lingering overhead, bringing frequent cloud cover and light variable winds that rarely align from the north. Occasional windows of light offshore flow can occur when a cold front pushes into the Caribbean, but they are brief and hard to predict. This is the month to watch the forecast closely and be ready to jump when the stars align.

November: The Toughest Month for Clean Surf

November is the low point of the year for wind quality. Average swell height drops to 1.2m with a period of 12.4s – still capable of producing punchy waves, especially from the dominant SSW direction (91.6%). However, the offshore wind percentage plummets to just 16%, the lowest of the year. The wind rose reveals persistent onshore flow: SSW (13.3%), SW (14.1%), and WSW (10.8%) dominate, often accompanied by higher wind speeds (10-20 kph) as the ITCZ lingers. Light offshore flow from NNE, NE, and NNW is very rare (combined ~3.5%). The wave quality suffers from constant wind-chopped surfaces and poor shape. When a rare cold front pushes into the Gulf of Mexico, it can briefly pull the wind to the north, but the windows are short. November is best for chasing swell windows rather than expecting consistent surf. The occasional 12-second groundswell with offshore flow can still fire, but you’ll need to be ready.
