Best Surf Season (October - March)

While Boca Barranca is far from a world-class wave, the months from October through March offer the best window for catching rideable surf. During this period, average swell periods climb into the 11-14 second range, indicating long-period energy from distant North Pacific storms. Though swell heights remain tiny (averaging 0.2-0.3m), the occasional pulse of W or WNW swell can sneak in and combine with light offshore winds from the east or southeast. This is when the river mouth sandbars can shape a few fun-sized, crumbly waves for a grovel session. Still, don't expect greatness — consistency and size are serious challenges.

Fair Surf Season (April - September)

From April through September, the average wave period peaks at a spectacular 14-14.5 seconds, hinting at long-period Southern Hemisphere swell. However, the swell direction is overwhelmingly from the SSW (60-75%) and S, which is far from optimal for this WNW-facing beach. These southerly swells either bypass the spot completely or wrap in weakly, creating tiny, weak waves. Wind patterns also become more variable, with an increase in S and SSW winds (often onshore) and a drop in the light NE trades. The result is a prolonged flat spell with occasional micro-swell and chop. This is the low-energy heart of the year for Boca Barranca.

Low Surf Season (Year-Round Reality)

Honestly, Boca Barranca is a marginal surf spot year-round. The average swell height barely exceeds 0.3m in any month, and ideal offshore wind conditions occur less than 1% of the time. The dominant swell direction (SSW) aligns poorly with the WNW beach exposure, and the prevailing NE trade winds blow sideshore or slightly onshore. Even when long-period energy is present, the lack of size and proper swell angle means waves rarely become rideable. For the dedicated surfer, the best approach is to chase the few days each year when a WNW swell coincides with an easterly offshore breeze — but those are rare gems in an otherwise quiet surf climate.

January: The Silent Start

January brings the quietest surf of the year, with an average swell height of just 0.2m and a period of 10.9s. Swell direction is dominated by SSW (50.1%) and S (12.4%), both of which are aimed away from the WNW-facing beach; little to no energy from the optimal W or WNW directions (0.3% each) reaches the coast. Wave heights remain below 0.5m 99% of the time, making this a true micro-surf month. The wind is never ideal, with the prevailing NNE (23.4%) and NE (26.7%) breeze blowing side-onshore. A few light easterly trends (E: 3%, ENE: 6.5%) offer minor clean-up potential, but overall, January is best left for beach walks and fishing.
