Best Surf Season (January - March)

The heart of the dry season brings the most consistent offshore wind regime to Boca Damas. During these months, the Intertropical Convergence Zone retreats south, allowing a stable northerly flow to set up along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. With ideal wind percentages peaking between 25-28%, expect clean, glassy conditions most mornings, courtesy of offshore breezes from the N to NNE quadrants. Swell heights average between 0.9-1.1m, building through the period, and periods hover in the 12-14 second range, delivering a high-quality, waist-to-chest high wave. The dominant SSW swell trains wrap in with excellent shape, making this the prime window for consistent, fun surf.

Fair Surf Season (April - June & September - November)

As the dry season transitions into the green season, the wind patterns become more variable. The Northeast Trades weaken and are increasingly replaced by onshore SSW and SW flow, especially in the afternoons. Still, mornings often offer a clean window before the seabreeze ruins it. Swell size picks up significantly, averaging 1.2-1.4m with periods of 13-14s, providing more power and punch. April, September, and October see a higher percentage of offshore wind (21-26%), creating solid opportunities, especially on a building swell. Expect occasional overhead waves with good shape, but you'll need to time the tides and wind carefully.

Low Surf Season (July - August)

The core of the rainy season brings the most challenging conditions. Ideal wind percentages drop to just 19-20%, with persistent onshore flow from the SSW and SW quadrants dominating the wind rose. Swell remains robust at 1.4m average with 13-second periods, so there is plenty of energy in the water, but the wave quality suffers from choppy, texture-filled faces. The combination of midday thermal lows and the Intertropical Convergence Zone overhead means consistent wind from the wrong direction. Surfable waves still occur, especially during early morning cleanups or if a strong high-pressure system pushes a brief offshore flow, but it's a gamble. Plan for waist-high+ chop and bring a groveler for the less-than-perfect moments.

August: Similar to July, Slightly More Wind

August sees a marginal uptick in ideal wind to 20%, but conditions remain heavily influenced by the wet season. Swell averages 1.4m with a 13.2s period, still solid. The direction is again dominated by SSW (90.2%), with a slight increase in SW (6.9%) and some S (2.8%). The wind distribution shows a slight increase in NW and NNW components (6.4% combined) compared to July, which can occasionally provide brief offshore conditions. However, most of the time, the wind is from the S to SW sector. The wave height distribution shows a good chunk in the 1.5-2m class (23.5%), so there is size. Expect waist-to-head high surf with texture. The best chance is early morning with a high pressure ridge in the Gulf of Mexico.
