Best Surf Season (May - September)

During the Australian autumn and winter, the Southern Ocean roars to life, sending consistent and powerful south swells towards Bondi. The dominant swell directions shift to SSE and S, directly hitting the beach's SSE exposure and delivering clean, long-period waves. Simultaneously, high-pressure systems migrating north across the Tasman Sea set up a favorable pressure gradient, funnelling offshore winds from the NW through N quadrants. This combination results in the highest percentage of ideal surfing conditions, with wave periods averaging over 9 seconds and swell heights in the fun to pumping 1-1.5m to 1.5-2.5m range. May through September is prime time for Bondi's best waves.

Fair Surf Season (March, April, October)

The shoulder months of March, April, and October see a transition in swell and wind patterns. During March and April, the influence of Southern Ocean swells is increasing, but easterly trade winds still mix in, bringing less consistent conditions. October retains some of the southern swell but winds become more variable as summer approaches. Ideal wind percentages hover around 30-34%, and wave periods remain solid (8.7-9.4s). These months offer a good chance of quality waves, though less reliable than the peak winter season.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer in Australia brings a lull in surf quality at Bondi. The predominant swell shifts to east-northeast (ENE, E, ESE), which are not the optimal directions for this south-facing beach. Although these swells can still produce rideable waves, they are often accompanied by onshore winds from the NE and NNE, which create choppy, messy conditions. Wave periods drop to around 8.3-8.8 seconds, and the ideal offshore wind percentage falls to just 25-29%. While rare, days with a late afternoon sea breeze or a passing trough can still deliver, but overall, November through February are the least consistent months for quality surf at Bondi.

December: Summer Kickoff with Marginal Surf

December completes the cycle back to summer. Swell heights average 1.5m (the lowest of the year), periods are short at 8.3s, and the direction is overwhelmingly from the east and northeast. Ideal wind conditions are at a yearly low of 27%, with persistent NE seabreezes and north-easterly trades smearing the surface. Offshore flows from the NW and N are rare (combined ~12%), so most days are a battle against bumpy onshore winds. Despite the marginal stats, Bondi can still surprise with clean conditions when a late-season cold front or a tropical low in the Coral Sea sends a pulse of E swell with light land breezes. However, consistency is low; this is a month for loggers and longboarders to find small, fun corners.
