Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months as the polar jet stream plunges south, firing up a relentless parade of extratropical cyclones across the North Atlantic. This is the heart of the winter swell window, and Bordeira sits perfectly positioned to intercept the dominant NW to WNW groundswells. Average wave heights hover around the 2m mark, with periods consistently in the 10-14s range – delivering powerful, lined-up waves. The best part? Offshore winds from the south and southwest blow a clean 20-25% of the time, creating those glassy, groomed conditions that make this stretch of coast world-class. When the NAO is negative, the Azores High retreats, allowing lows to track directly toward Portugal – that's when Bordeira absolutely pumps.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the winter storm track shifts north, the swell engine starts to sputter. April still sees a decent amount of NW swell, but average heights drop to 1.9m and periods shorten to around 11s. The wind becomes more fickle – offshore percentages fall to 11-14%. May is transitional: smaller NW swell (1.6m avg, 9.8s period) and a rising north-northwest background wind that often ruins the surface. September is the real surprise – the Atlantic wakes up early, with average heights back up to 1.5m and periods lengthening to 10.4s. Offshore wind returns to 14% of the time, making for occasional fun, punchy sessions as the first autumn lows brush the Iberian coast.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer in southern Portugal is dominated by the Azores High – a stubborn ridge that blocks major low-pressure systems from reaching these latitudes. Swell direction becomes almost exclusively NW to NNW, but the size drops dramatically: 1.4m average, with periods barely cracking 9s. Worse, the predominant wind regime shifts to a strong northerly flow (the 'Nortada') – the worst possible direction for Bordeira as it blows directly onshore, chopping up whatever waves trickle in. Offshore wind is virtually nonexistent (5-8% of the time). While you can still find a few rideable days, especially early mornings before the sea breeze kicks up, this is the time to rest the quiver and explore other activities.

November: Peak Consistency

November is arguably the most consistent month of the year. Average swell height is 2.1m with a 12.0s period. The swell distribution shows a healthy spread across NW (28.9%), WNW (15.6%), NNW (14.9%), and even some W (5.2%). This variety means Bordeira is almost always receiving some form of useable swell. Ideal offshore wind occurs 23% of the time, and the wind pattern is relatively diverse – while N winds are still common (16%), the frequency of offshore quadrants (S, SSW, SW, W) totals around 17%. The storms become more frequent and intense, and the NAO often turns negative, swinging the storm track directly into Portugal. Expect solid head-high to overhead waves with plenty of power. It's a month to watch the charts closely.
