Best Surf Season (October - March)

During these months, the North Atlantic storm track is fully active, sending consistent, moderate to large swell into the North Sea. Borkum's NNW exposure means it's perfectly aligned to capture the most powerful NW-NNW swell trains. Average wave heights hover around 1.0-1.3m, often reaching 1.5-2.5m during peak events, providing 'pumping' to 'firing' conditions. Wave periods average 6.3-6.5s, but long-period swells (>10s) become more common, delivering substantial power. Crucially, the wind regime shifts: high-pressure over continental Europe and lows tracking north allow frequent southerly to southwesterly winds (SSW-SW), which blow directly offshore at Borkum. This creates clean, groomed waves. The ideal wind percentage peaks at 11-13% in October through January, but the raw volume of swell ensures plenty of rideable days, even if not perfectly clean. This is prime time for Borkum.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These are transitional months. In April, the North Atlantic is still moderately active, and you can find overhead swell from NNW-NW, but the average wave height drops to 0.8m. The wind is tricky: spring brings more variable winds, with higher frequencies of onshore north-northeast winds. September sees a resurgence: average swell height climbs back to 1.0m, and ideal wind windows start to open again (11%). While not as consistent as winter, these months offer a decent shot at clean, fun-sized waves, especially during the occasional early autumn low.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the quietest period for Borkum. The North Atlantic storm track weakens, resulting in average swell heights of only 0.8m and short periods (5.3-5.6s). The dominant swell direction is still NNW-NW, but most of it is under 1m, often only 'small' or 'micro'. Additionally, the prevailing wind pattern becomes northerly to northeasterly, which is directly onshore for this north-facing beach. The ideal wind percentage bottoms out at 8-9%. You'll find many days with choppy, messy waves and occasional small, clean waves if a south wind sets up. It's a good time for longboards and funboards, but serious surfers usually look elsewhere or take a break.

April: Dwindling Size, Tricky Winds

April marks a significant drop in average swell height to 0.8m, with periods averaging 6.1s. Swell from NNW (26.5%) and NW (13.2%) is still abundant, but most waves are in the 0.5-1m range—fun-sized but not powerful. Wind patterns become problematic: N (6.9%), NNE (5.9%), and NE (6.7%) combine to create frequent onshore conditions. Offshore winds from S-SSW are less common, with ideal wind at only 8%. The occasional low can still produce clean, rippable waves, but you'll need to pick your days carefully and favor morning sessions when wind is lighter.
