Deep low-pressure systems track across the Atlantic, sending long-period WSW-to-WNW groundswells into Dingle Bay. Average wave heights bounce between 1.4m and 1.9m, with periods often exceeding 12 seconds, meaning clean, pitching walls when the wind cooperates. The rub? The predominant wind direction shifts to the SSW-W quadrant, exactly onshore for this southwest-facing beach. The ideal window — a crisp, offshore NNO-ONO breeze — occurs only about a quarter of the time. But when a high-pressure ridge stalls over the UK and funnels those cold continental winds across Ireland, Brandon Bay lights up: hollow, lined-up sets wrapping around the bay. It's a classic winter gamble, but one that pays off in pumping, firing conditions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Shoulder seasons bring a welcome compromise. In April and September, the average swell drops to 1.2m and periods settle around 10-11 seconds, offering more manageable, fish-friendly waves. The trade-off: the frequency of ideal offshore winds climbs to 25-35% of the time. The jet stream weakens, storms become less frequent, but the lingering Atlantic fetch still provides rideable swell. During April, light northerly winds often graze the bay, grooming the swell into clean, rippable lines. September offers a final burst of summer warmth and more reliable offshore windows as the first autumn lows begin to stir. These months are perfect for intermediate surfers looking to hone their craft without the winter crowds or the winter rage.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer at Brandon Bay is a flat-season reality for the dedicated wave chaser. From May through August, average wave heights hover just below 1m, and periods dip into the 8-9 second range — small, fun-size waves at best, often too weak to break with any real push. The dominant wind flow turns onshore from the SW-W for much of the time, ruining what little shape there is. While the odds of offshore winds improve slightly in June and July (up to 28%), the swell is simply too small to justify a dedicated session. Think micro-sessions with high-volume boards and a sense of humor. The occasional distant swell from a tropical storm or a rare low can salvage a day, but for the most part, these months are best spent exploring Ireland's inland treasures or saving your energy for the autumn onslaught.

July: The Flattest of the Year

July represents the absolute low point for surf at Brandon Bay. Average swell height stays at 0.9m, but the period drops further to 8.8 seconds — the lowest of any month. The wave direction data shows a massive concentration in the W (29.6%) and WNW (32.5%) quadrants, but most of it is in the 0.5-1m range. Waves over 1.5m account for less than 3% of observations. The ideal wind window shrinks to 22%, the same as January, but now the swell is far too small to make use of it. Onshore winds from SSW through W are very frequent, adding up to over 40% of all wind observations. The Water is warmer, but the waves are barely rideable. True flat spells can stretch for days. July is a month for exploring other activities, unless you're keen on tiny, groveling conditions with a log.
