Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, delivering the most consistent and powerful swell to Byberg's WNW-facing beach. Average wave heights climb from 1.3m in October to a peak of 1.6m in January, with periods often in the 8-9 second range—solid, punchy, and rideable. The combination of deep low-pressure systems tracking across the Norwegian Sea and a favorable NAO index funnels W, WNW, and NW swell directly into the coast. Offshore wind conditions from the east through south-southeast are most frequent during these months, especially in February and December when ideal wind percentages hit 15% and 13% respectively. This is prime time for clean, lined-up waves at Byberg.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

As the seasons transition, April and September offer a mixed bag. Swell heights average 0.9-1.0m and periods drop to 7.1-7.5s, indicating more windswell than groundswell. The wind is ideal only 9-12% of the time, but episodes of high pressure can bring light offshore breezes from the ESE-SSE quadrant. While not the peak, these months can produce fun, rippable waves when conditions align. Expect smaller, groveling days interspersed with occasional solid pulses.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles in with a dramatic drop in swell activity. Average wave heights hover around 0.7-0.8m and periods dwindle to 6.0-6.8s—mostly windswell with little power. The dominant swell direction shifts to NW and even NNW, which, while not ideal, still provides some surf. However, ideal offshore wind conditions are rare (only 7-8% of the time) and onshore winds from the NW and NNW prevail, ruining wave quality. This is the time for longboard groveling or seeking other activities; consistent, quality surf is scarce.

January: Midwinter Might

January is the heart of the Norwegian winter and delivers the highest average swell height of the year at 1.6m with a period of 8.4s. The swell direction is dominated by W (13.3%), WNW (11.1%), and NW (11.2%)—directly in Byberg's sweet spot. This means plenty of powerful, punchy waves in the 1-2m range. Wind is ideal (east through south-southeast) only 12% of the time, but the predominant wind directions are from the SE (11.9%) and SSE (10.8%), which blow offshore and keep the face clean. However, strong onshore winds from the N and NNW also occur, so timing is everything. When the offshore kicks in, expect firing barrels and long rippable walls.
