Best Surf Season (February - May)

The austral autumn delivers the most favorable combination of wind and swell at Caballeros. During these months, the South Pacific storm track is active, producing consistent long-period SSW and SW swell. Average wave heights range from 1.5m to 1.8m, with periods averaging 13-13.6s, providing punchy, rippable waves. Crucially, the frequency of offshore winds from the north and east quadrants increases slightly, with the percentage of ideal surfable wind peaking in March at 14%. While still a minority, these windows offer clean conditions when the swell and wind align. The dominant synoptic pattern features a semi-permanent South Pacific high that often sets up light easterly flows, especially in the mornings. This is the window to target for the best quality waves.

Fair Surf Season (January & June)

January and June sit at the transition points between the best and low seasons. January offers solid SSW swell (avg 1.4m, 13.0s) but ideal wind drops to 4%, with onshore southwesterly winds still prevalent. June sees the swell size increase to 1.9m, the highest of the year, driven by stronger winter storms. However, onshore wind frequencies increase further, with ideal wind at only 4%. June's swell is more powerful (long-period, heavy), but the window for clean conditions narrows. Both months require patience and early morning sessions to catch light wind periods before the afternoon seabreeze kicks in.

Low Surf Season (July - December)

From July through December, Caballeros experiences its most challenging surf conditions. While the Southern Hemisphere winter and spring generate substantial swell (averaging 1.6-1.9m with periods of 12.8-13.2s), the wind patterns become overwhelmingly unfavorable. The percentage of time with ideal (offshore) wind plummets to 2-3%. Dominant winds are from the S, SSW, and SW, blowing directly onshore and ruining the wave quality. The South Pacific high shifts northward, strengthening the southeast trade winds that wrap around and hit the coast from the south. This creates constant messy, choppy conditions even when sizable swell arrives. The months of August and September are particularly tough, with the lowest ideal wind percentages. Occasional early morning windows can still deliver, but they are rare and fleeting. For the dedicated surfer, this is a time for low expectations and high patience.

January: Hope on the Horizon

January marks the start of the calendar year with a solid average swell height of 1.4m and a long period averaging 13.0s, indicating powerful, rideable waves predominantly from the SSW (71.3% of all swell) and SW (27.5%). This southwest groundswell is perfect for the west-southwest exposure of Caballeros. The wind, however, remains a major challenge. Ideal offshore wind blows only 4% of the time, with the dominant flow coming from the S (22.2%) and SSW (37.6%), creating constant onshore, choppy conditions. Light wind from the SSE (5.7%) and S (22.1%) adds to the roughness. The best surf will occur in brief early morning windows when the seabreeze is calm, but overall, quality is limited. Patience is key; the swell is there, but clean conditions are rare.
