Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months as the polar jet stream fuels a seemingly endless parade of deep, powerful extratropical cyclones. For Cabedelo de Viana, this means consistent pumping swell in the 1.5-2.5m+ range with average periods often exceeding 12 seconds. The dominant swell energy arrives from the NW and WNW, but the real magic for this SW-facing beach happens when lows track close enough to swing the swell into the S, SSW, SW, or WSW quadrant. Those directions, combined with cold fronts clearing the air to reveal offshore breezes from N, NNE, NE, or ENE, deliver the classic, long, lined-up waves the spot is famous for. December through February are the peak months, offering the highest average wave heights (2.6-2.7m) and the best statistical chance of epic, heavy conditions. The drawback is a relatively lower ideal wind percentage (51-53%), but the reward when the pieces align is world-class surf.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the atmospheric pattern transitions, the raw power of winter begins to fade, but quality waves are still very much on the menu. April and May see average swell heights dropping from 2.1m to 1.7m and periods shortening from 11s to 10s, yet the wind becomes more reliable, with ideal offshore flow approaching 52-60% of the time. The swell direction shifts increasingly from the NW and NNW – not the optimal southern quadrant for Cabedelo, but a good percentage of the energy still comes from the W and WSW. This means fun, rippable waves in the 1-2m range are common, often under clean skies. September is the real gem of this group: with the ocean still warm and the first autumn lows beginning to spin up, average swell rebounds to 1.6m with a solid 10.4s period, and the wind is ideal a generous 60% of the time. Expect solid, punchy surf with far fewer crowds than the winter peak.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles over the Portuguese coast, dominated by the Azores High. The raw, long-period swell trains of winter are replaced by smaller, shorter-period windswell. Average wave heights bottom out at 1.4-1.5m, and periods drop to 8.6-9.2s. While the percentage of ideal offshore wind reaches its annual maximum (58-63%), predominantly from the N and NNW, the fetch-limited Atlantic rarely sends the strong southern quadrant swell that truly lights up Cabedelo. A great deal of the daily surf falls into the small, fun-sized category – fine for a grovel board or a longboard, but rarely producing the powerful, hollow lines of winter. July is the quietest month, with the least swell from optimal directions. Still, for beginners or those looking for a warm-water cruise, these months offer the most consistent flat-water conditions for learning.

April: Cleaner Skies, Lighter Swell

April marks a noticeable turn toward spring. The average swell drops to 2.1m, and the period falls to 10.9s, indicating a mix of groundswell and windswell. The fun, rippable size range becomes more common. The swell rose shows a shift toward more NW (22.3%) and WNW (21.9%) energy, with the W (9.1%) also contributing. Optimal southern quadrant swell (SSW, SW, WSW) totals around 7-8%, so the odds of a perfect direction are lower, but when it arrives, it can be solid. The wind becomes more favourable overall: ideal wind percentage is 51%, but the offshore winds from N (11.7%), NNW (12.2%), and NNE (9.3%) are common. The lighter winds of April mean that even less-than-ideal swell directions can still produce clean, fun-sized waves. It's an excellent month for intermediate surfers to enjoy the beach without winter's intensity.
