Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic flexes its muscles during these months, delivering consistent, powerful swell to Cabedelo. Average wave heights hover between 1.4m and 1.8m, with periods frequently ranging from 11 to 13 seconds, providing the long period, powerful surf that this west-facing beach loves. The dominant swell directions – WNW, W, and NW – align perfectly with the beach's exposure, while the wind patterns show a healthy 37-47% ideal (offshore) conditions, often courtesy of easterly and southeasterly flows associated with high-pressure systems over the Iberian Peninsula. When low-pressure tracks send pulses of WNW swell and the winds clock around to the E or SE, conditions can be epic, with clean, hollow waves peeling along the sandbar.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transition months offer a mixed bag. Swell heights drop to around 1.1-1.3m, with periods in the 10-11 second range – still fun and rideable but lacking the grunt of winter. The ratio of offshore wind dips to 26-28%, meaning you'll need to pick your windows. April sees a notable WNW (44%) and NW (26%) swell, while September brings similar directions. Easterly winds can still deliver clean conditions, but the consistency drops off. These months are best for those flexible enough to chase the infrequent but quality days.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer at Cabedelo is generally small and inconsistent. Average wave heights range from 0.9m to 1.1m, with periods dropping to 8-10 seconds – small, groveling conditions that favour longboards and fish. The swell is still primarily from WNW and NW, but much weaker. The real issue is the wind: offshore (E/SE) flow is scarce, with ideal wind percentages bottoming out at 11-14%. The predominant wind direction becomes NNW and N, which is side-shore and can create bumpy surfaces. However, on the rare days when a stiff easterly blows, the small ripples can be fun. Generally, it's a low season, but the odd summer groundswell from a distant storm can surprise.

June: Summer Lull

June brings true summer consistency – but small. Average height is 1.0m, period 9.3s. Swell directions are overwhelmingly WNW (44.0%) and NW (38.2%), yet the energy is weak, with most waves in the 0.5-1.5m range. Ideal wind plummets to 14%, the lowest of the year so far. The wind rose shows NNW (29.0%) and N (13.0%) dominating, meaning bumpy, wind-affected surf is the norm. Still, the west-facing orientation means any NW swell that sneaks in with an offshore easterly (rare, 5% from E/ESE) can turn a flat day into a playful session. This is a month for loggers and those chasing the summer fog. Don't expect firing barrels, but fun summer surf can be had.
