Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roar to life from October through March, delivering the most consistent and powerful swells to Cabo do Mundo. The dominant swell directions are NW to W which align perfectly with the beach's west exposure. Offshore wind frequencies (from NO, ONO, O, OSO, SO) peak at 44-51% during these months, thanks to frequent high-pressure systems over mainland Europe directing clean easterly flows across the coast. Expect the most reliable and biggest surf of the year, fueled by deep extratropical cyclones tracking across the North Atlantic.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September act as transitional months, bridging the active winter pattern and the quieter summer regime. Average swell heights drop to 1.6-1.9m with periods around 10-11 seconds, producing fun to solid waves on most days. The swell direction remains predominantly NW and WNW, but the frequency and intensity of storms decrease. Offshore wind percentages hover around 35-36%, meaning good conditions are still findable but less consistent than in peak season. These months can deliver excellent waves when a late-season or early-autumn storm aligns with a favorable wind window.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, Cabo do Mundo experiences its lowest surf energy. Average wave heights drop to 1.4-1.6m with periods of 8-10 seconds, resulting in predominantly small to fun-sized surf. The swell direction is still mostly NW and NNW, but the shorter periods and weaker swell heights mean the waves are often average and punchy rather than powerful. Offshore wind frequencies fall to just 19-29% as the Azores High strengthens and drives stronger northerly and northwesterly winds, which are onshore for this west-facing beach. While grovelers and funboards will find rideable waves on smaller days, this is the least reliable period for quality surf at Cabo do Mundo, with many days too small or wind-affected.

May: Summer’s Approach

May marks the definitive shift into low season. Average swell height drops to 1.6m with a period of 9.8 seconds. The swell direction is heavily skewed towards NW (30.6%) and NNW (20.9%), meaning the waves are often shorter period and more windswell-driven. Wave heights peak in the 1-1.5m range (11.0% from NW), providing fun-sized surf for smaller boards. Offshore wind frequency is only 29%, with N (13.3%) and NNW (20.9%) winds dominating – these are not ideal for wave quality, often creating bumps and chop. The North Atlantic storm track is retreating, and the Azores High strengthens, leading to lighter but predominantly northerly winds. May is best for longboarders or those looking for a mellow session; don't expect any pumping swells.
