Canet Plage seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic flexes its muscles during autumn and winter, sending powerful low-pressure systems marching across Europe. For Canet Plage, this means a consistent diet of NW to NNW swell generated by the infamous Mistral wind. Average wave heights hover between 1.0m and 1.3m, with periods often reaching 5-6 seconds, providing punchy, rideable waves. The beauty lies in the wind regime: the same Mistral that whips up the swell also blows offshore from the NW to WNW, grooming the faces into clean lines. While groundswell is rare due to the short fetch, the combination of reliable swell and favourable offshore winds makes this the prime window for quality surf at Canet Plage. Expect crowd-favourite conditions from October through March, with the peak months of November to January delivering the most consistent action.
Fair Surf Season (April & September)
As the seasons transition, the swell energy begins to wane. April and September act as the bookends of the shoulder season, with average heights dropping to around 1.0-1.1m and periods shortening to 5 seconds. The Mistral still blows, but its frequency and intensity decrease, leading to a lower percentage of ideal wind days (25-28%). That said, when a late-season low sends a pulse of NW swell and clean offshore winds align, you can still find fun, groveling waves. These months offer a quieter lineup compared to winter, making them a decent bet for those willing to pick through smaller conditions.
Low Surf Season (May - August)
Summer brings a serious energy slump to Canet Plage. From May through August, average swell heights bottom out at 0.7-0.8m, and wave periods languish around 4.1-4.7 seconds, often too short to produce meaningful surf. The typical pattern is dominated by weak, short-period windswell from the SE to SSE, which arrives with onshore winds (bad for quality). Offshore wind days from the NW become less frequent, and the percentage of ideal surfing conditions drops to just 19-20%. On rare occasions, a distant storm in the Mediterranean can send a long-period pulse, but it’s a gamble. For dedicated surfers, this is the time to explore other pursuits or enjoy longboard cruising in waist-high mush.
