The Mistral still blows, but its frequency and intensity decrease, leading to a lower percentage of ideal wind days (25-28%). That said, when a late-season low sends a pulse of NW swell and clean offshore winds align, you can still find fun, groveling waves. These months offer a quieter lineup compared to winter, making them a decent bet for those willing to pick through smaller conditions.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings a serious energy slump to Canet Plage. From May through August, average swell heights bottom out at 0.7-0.8m, and wave periods languish around 4.1-4.7 seconds, often too short to produce meaningful surf. The typical pattern is dominated by weak, short-period windswell from the SE to SSE, which arrives with onshore winds (bad for quality). Offshore wind days from the NW become less frequent, and the percentage of ideal surfing conditions drops to just 19-20%. On rare occasions, a distant storm in the Mediterranean can send a long-period pulse, but it’s a gamble. For dedicated surfers, this is the time to explore other pursuits or enjoy longboard cruising in waist-high mush.

February: Similar Energy, Slightly Less Consistency

February carries much of the same character as January: strong NW winds (38.1% of the time) and a similar swell mix. Average wave height remains at 1.3m, and the period average is 5.4s. The dominant swell still comes from the NNW and NW (35.2% combined), providing a steady supply of windswell. One key difference is the slight increase in easterly swell (E at 6.7%), which can bring more onshore wind from the SE (9.2% of the time) and degrade conditions. The percentage of ideal surfing wind days drops to 31% as the Mistral's grip loosens a touch. Still, when the NW wind is blowing, the waves are often clean and fun-sized. February can be a bit more variable than January, but overall, it remains a peak winter month for Canet Plage. Surfable waves are the rule, not the exception.
